    Hello Norma!

Thanks for posting on our Community Forum.

This could be usually be caused when your backup location isn’t available for some reason. This could be because your drive is no longer writeable, or it has been disconnected accidentally. After you verify that these aren’t the reasons, you can use QuickBooks Verify and Rebuild Utility Tool.

    • Open the File menu, and click on the utility ion.
    • Click on Rebuild Data.
    • Open the file menu, and click on the Utilities option.
    • Click on Verify Data.

I really hope this worked for you. Let me know if it didn’t. alternatively, you can also contact QuickBooks Support if you’d like more information on the same. You can also view blog on how to make the best usage of the Rebuild and Verify Tool.

    Hope this helped.

    Cheers!

Hello David, as per the situation you explained to me it is quite possible that you may get the error and QuickBooks may ask you to run the file doctor application in order to fix the file.

Using QuickBooks Desktop is easy but there are some restrictions or we can say some precaution that we can take while using it. It is not recommended that we open the file from any external drive or flash drive. External drives are the unstable platform to keep the data file as we remove them again and again as per our requirement. It can also create corruption or due to security and permission reasons file may give you an error.

It’s better to keep it in the default location (Windows 8/7/Vista: C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\Intuit\QuickBooks\Company Files). Or if you are saving the file in the server then you can choose the specific location as per your requirement.

If you have the backup file and you want to restore it from flash drive you can follow the below-mentioned steps:

    1. Insert your storage device in your computer and open QuickBooks. If you haven’t already installed QuickBooks on your computer, do this first.
    2. Click the “File” menu and Choose “Restore Company.”
    3. Choose Restore a Backup Copy then click “Next.”
    4. Choose Local Backup as the location for your backup file.
    5. Navigate to your storage device and click on the QuickBooks backup file. Click “Open” and then “Next.”
    6. Confirm that you want to restore the backup file and select “Save” to initiate the restore process. (Note: You can save the file in your computer location or the default location)

If you are receiving this error while trying to update your QuickBooks, this might be due to missing or damaged components such as .Net Framework, Microsoft Visual C++, qbprefs.dll, ICWrapper.dll, qbupdate.exe.

The best way to resolve error 1904 is to use QB Installation Diagnostic Tool which automatically resolves the issues with the components however at times it does fail to resolve the problems on its own. In such an instance you might have to repair the components manually by following the below steps:

    1. First, ensure you have Administrator privileges
    2. Then Uninstall QuickBooks from the Programs List
    3. Restart the computer
    4. Now repair or reinstall Microsoft .Net Framework and Visual C++
    5. Download QuickBooks Setup again and install it
