I am getting Error -6073, -99001 when I try to open my QuickBooks Company File

I am getting an error message of “QuickBooks is unable to open this company file” with an error “-6073, -99001”. Please help.

You might come across situations where you are not able to login to your company file, which might not allow you to perform daily tasks in QuickBooks. It might also become frustrating when you were about to start your day and you see an error message. 

 Let’s understand the cause of this error, following which we will know how to resolve it.

QuickBooks Error 6073 usually occurs when the company file is either in use by another user in Single-User environment or the file does not have appropriate write permissions.

Now, I am sure you must have already verified that nobody else was logged in to the file, later you have raised this concern on this community. At times, the QuickBooks application does not fully close, even if the user is logged out of the company file.

Following are the solutions that can help you resolve the QuickBooks Error 6073:

 Solution 1: Use the QuickBooks File Doctor

You can download the QB File Doctor Tool which can automatically resolve many errors with your company files however in many cases it does not resolve all such errors. Alternatively, you can reach out to a QuickBooks Certified ProAdvisor who can help you resolve the issue.

Solution 2: Restart all the Computer where QuickBooks is installed

 Restarting all the computers where you have QuickBooks installed can also help you resolve the problem as it will automatically end the hidden QuickBooks tasks.

Solution 3: Fix the Company File Permissions

 As discussed earlier, the company file or the folder where your files are located might be in a “Read-Only” mode which will not allow QuickBooks to access the file. You can follow below steps to fix the permissions:

    1. Go to the folder which contains your QuickBooks files

 

    1. In the Folder properties, uncheck the “Read Only” option and click Apply

 

    1. Re-launch QuickBooks and open the Company file again
