How do I map a Sales Tax Item to the correct account in QuickBooks Online?

My client has an account called “Board of Equalization Payable” that really should be called “Sales Tax Payable.” I want to have all sales tax items pointing to the “Sales Tax Payable” account. I can’t seem to be able to merge the two accounts into “Sales Tax Payable.” I can’t find where to edit the sales tax items for remapping. It’s not like QB desktop and as usual, QBO is incredibly aggravating. How do I fix this in QBO?

Understanding that keeping incorrect account in chart of account might become big challenging in chart of account for your business but there is no need to worry as you get that option to change the account in chart of account in QuickBooks online using the recommend steps for re-mapping account.

When you pay taxes, the sales tax in your Sales Tax Payable account decreases. If you have been already using other account to manually input your sales tax then you can change the old account by merging it with the Income Tax Payable account.

To re-map the account in Chart of account follow the steps below:

Note: You need to Choose the same account you want merge to the Income Tax Payable account. go to the gear icon to the left of the account’s name list left or right, this step is applicable if the account you want to merge is not at the same hierarchical level.

  1. Go to “List” menu from the top and click on “Chart of Accounts.”
  2. Choose the “Account” button and choose “Edit Account.” option
  3. Hit on “Type” drop-down menu and choose “Other Current Liability.”
  4. Type the “Income Tax Payable” in the Name field.
  5. Clear the “Description” and “Bank No.” fields to remove all text.
  6. Do uncheck the box for “Sub-account Of,” “Account is Inactive” and “Is a Payroll Account”
  7. Choose the “Tax Line” drop-down list to “Unassigned.”
